Offensive cartoons

I was totally offended by the Feb. 27 Glenn McCoy cartoon. To show the president in bed with a prostitute, to link the prostitute with NPR (which is ridiculous) and to state that the administration is trying to use taxpayer money to increase funding for NPR borders on obscene.

In addition, although I agree with the message in the same day’s Lee Judge cartoon, I think the use of the term “SOB” to describe the Republican elephant was unnecessary and inflammatory.

There is a movement in this country to try to reach a conciliatory position between differing views, and false representations and name-calling do not promote unity. I can only imagine that the Opinion department was asleep when these cartoons were approved for the paper, and I sincerely hope I am not the only one to express this opinion.

....that is the first time I've ever seen the Civil War being described as a "war of choice"....it does not fit at all....civil wars are almost never a "war of choice"....

When you complain about political cartoons, I wonder where you were during American History class in high school. There is no such thing as free speech if someone can take it away because they don't like what you say. Do you recall, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Criticizing the government is the number one thing that everyone should be able to do. Can you imagine what kind of elections we would have if anyone who dared to challenge the incumbent risked jail. Note that this was perpetrated by Lincoln. He silenced criticism of his policies by jailing newspapers editors who opinined that the Civil War was a bad idea. Consequence was a million dead in that war of choice.

Free speech must be free of any exceptions for content. The Supreme Court was correct in the Phelps case and in Citizens United. Any other decision would have been disastrous. It troubles me that the vote in Phelps was only 8-1 and not 9-0. That means that Sam Alito has the same perverted view of freedom that the writer does.

....thanks zeno...I raised a topic I hope we can have fun with this weekend....Pistols not for All

Sol if you are still around i answered you on yesterdays topic.

...gg...you are tiresome...that post was based on theirs.....

Jack King

Ms GG I suspect it is because McCoy so effectively gores your left wing ox, not his drawing that draws your ire. But then the Scribbler Judge affects me the same way.

ggbridge

LL, I'm a little surprised at you. Liberal idiots? How quickly you've gone from a rational independent to an uber conservative - makes me think that's where you started from in the first place.

McCoy's cartoons are tough because the drawings are so ugly. One needs only to glance at the cartoon to know it's going to be snarky and stereotypical.

LL

Note Mr & Mrs??? Rnyuk....how come the liberal idiots always bring up Rush & FOX...come on....try to be more original...

Should it matter to anyone that you were offended? Life is offensive. No one gets treated with respect by life. Get over it!

Jack King

Note to Rynuk: Whatsa matter you still ticked because Olbbermann got fired and Air America folded?

JJ

What exactly is the problem, Herb? As long as the same terms are coined for both major parties, what's the issue?

Yes, the holder of the nation's highest office is in bed with a ho called Wall Street, as is his administration, Congress and the agencies originally designed to protect the public, not crooks.

As long as the above is the case, many stronger things could be said about the so-called representatives of the (Wall Street) people.

Hey Ronald Stockbauer

good to know we've got another lost hippie from the worst generation giving us his great insight.

Rnyuk

Well Jack and Solomon, your obvisously beckerheads and oxycontin Rush disciples. Stay tuned to Fox for futher talking points

Jack King

Take a chill pill Herb. If you think political cartoons are over the top today, go back to the Lincoln-Douglas campaign and check those out.

Solomon

....c'mon Herb, lighten up, it's not like the cartoon insulted a prophet or anything big like that...it just showed the holder of the highest office in our great nation in bed with a whore...surely there have been other presidents before who where disrespected in this trivial way....and I'm confused with the SOB comment, you agree with the cartoonist that reps are SOB's but you think it shouldn't be said out loud?.....I am as confused as you are offended....

.....as for the opinion department being asleep...
