My heart goes out to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. One can only imagine her frustration and determination to return to her normal life before her brain injury.
My daughter was brain injured 22 years ago, and she was determined to return to her life as it was before.
I was with her every day during her year-and-a-half therapy for coma recovery, and I learned that one of the deficits brain injured people suffer is impaired judgment. Unfortunately, this will become an issue if Giffords ever chooses to run again in the future.
No matter how passionate her desire to return to Congress, the tragic truth is that an injured brain does not function exactly as it did prior to injury. That is a difficult adjustment for survivors to make and heartbreaking for the person’s loved ones to witness.
I wish Giffords the best possible outcome, but sadly her condition will have to be objectively assessed in any future political election.
God bless her and all brain injury survivors.
