A better stimulus
Our government leaders are showing their incompetence once again. If they really wanted to boost the economy, they could do it by partially fixing Social Security.
Eliminate the income cap for taking FICA deductions. Make it just like Medicare — no limit.
Lower the tax rate for all payers, employers and employees, so that the cash inflow remains revenue neutral.
Most folks would be far more comfortable spending the sudden increase in income since they will realize it is permanent, not a one time fix. The high income folks won’t miss the money anyway, and we won’t go farther in debt.

Unfair to future generations
Earlier this month, letter writer Peter Theoharis suggested that funding the U.S. government with deficit spending amounted to thievery (1/10). Other writers have disagreed, but he is correct.
Year after year, Americans receive more government services than they are willing to pay for and charge the balance to future generations. Any candidate who states the obvious, that we must spend less or tax more, commits political suicide.
If this generation of Americans is committed to spending more on itself than it is willing to pay for, it would be a more honorable course to form raiding parties to attack foreign countries and loot them of their treasures. We could use the booty to finance the difference between what we want and what we will pay for.
At least those who were attacked could make a choice to either give up the goods or defend themselves. As it is, we are taking from children and generations not yet born, a group unable to resist the plunder.

Wrong on income, taxes
Once again I’m left to wonder where on earth Lewis Diuguid is coming from (1/16, Opinion, “Dr. King’s greatest dream still unfulfilled”).
I won’t even waste time commenting on his unsupported reasons for minority problems. He seldom lets facts interfere with his conclusions. However, I have to comment on these remarks: “The top 1 percent of Americans had income increases ... that exceeded the total income of the poorest 20 percent of people in this country ... People should be outraged.”
For what? Doesn’t he know that the top 10 percent of earners in this country pay 70 percent of the taxes? Doesn’t he know that the 50 percent and below of earners in this country pay only about 10 percent of the taxes collected?
Why on earth should anyone be outraged? The top earners are playing the tab. It took about five minutes online to find and confirm this information.
I guess if your bread and butter is leading the victim whine, facts are not something you should waste time on.
