Lack of moisture still a worry

“Winter’s legacy: No more drought” (2/23, A-1) is not quite complete. The government may be overlooking something. At least where I live, we are still experiencing the effects of a seven-year drought. Just because we’ve had 10 to 14 inches of snow on top of frozen ground and ice doesn’t mean that this moisture will break the drought. Rancher Dave Mullnix was close regarding full ponds, but there is something much more important, and that’s subsoil moisture. When my ponds are full and when my springs are running, then and only then will I declare the drought over. I hope the local weather personnel will not take The Star’s article as their license to start talking negatively about coming rainstorms.
