Keep laughing — and vote

I thoroughly enjoy reading the Letters page every day. If nothing else I do get a chuckle — from the Mark/Gloria situation with its City Council to the presidential elections. Kansas City and its surrounding areas sure have some very intelligent people. I’m glad everyone is keeping a sense of humor.

I also want to encourage those who can to vote on Election Day. Use good judgment, think of our future, and let’s love each other no matter what.

Clothes make the moose

I am tired of all the hype about Sarah Palin. We keep hearing over and over again how she can dress a moose.

I am sure I could dress a moose as well as she can, if he would only stand still long enough.

Just read the bumper stickers

As I was driving on the highway with my 10-year-old son, he asked me what the difference was between a Republican and a Democrat. As I was trying to figure out the best way to explain, we saw a car with a McCain bumper sticker, and next to it, a car with an Obama bumper sticker.

The car with the McCain sticker was an expensive Lexus sedan. The car with the Obama sticker was a late model Chrysler. That, I said, is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat.

There is no truth to the rumor that all UPS drivers must half-mast their skivvies for the next 30 workdays in memory of Big Brown’s failure to win the Triple Crown.

Smoking ordinance

I enjoyed the story on the three comedy clubs in town (8/26, A+E, “It’s all just for laughs”).

My husband and I have been to Famous Johnny’s Comedy Club in Overland Park twice in the last three weeks. I think all the people who are against the city’s smoking ordinance should go there and see that no smoking does not ruin a business.

Both times that we were there (on Saturday nights even) the crowds were good and smokers and nonsmokers were peacefully coexisting.

People who wanted to smoke simply went outside on the patio and smoked. It seems to be working well at that particular comedy club.

What’s the deal?

What Kansas City suburbs need are more shopping centers. I am so sick of seeing open fields or trees crowding the space where there is a desperate need for Wal-Marts, McDonalds, and Starbucks.

As it stands, I have to drive my Hummer almost a full mile to pick up my Big Mac or double-shot espresso mocha cappuccino.

In addition, what’s the deal with tickets for littering?

Reason for weight gain

Much is being said about gaining weight. As it pertains to me, I feel certain lots of pounds are due to the number of words I’ve had to eat during my 85-plus years.

Warning: Offensive content

I can hear all the fussing already about the Sarah Silverman skit portraying a one-night stand with God:

“This is the lowest! We must boycott Comedy Central and all its advertisers!”

I don’t consider myself a prude or religious fanatic. In fact I often laugh at “This Week in God” on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” I generally feel most topics are fair game. If you want to subscribe to cable and choose to watch those things, great. More power to you. Otherwise, change the channel or turn the TV off.

However, I wonder what sort of reaction the same program would have gotten had Silverman portrayed herself as an “infidel,” having a “relationship” with the Prophet Mohammed?

I am certain many groups would have already denounced all those associated with the program, demanding everyone apologize and go to counseling. Lawsuits of some nature would have already been filed, and perhaps a few riots taken place in protest.

Of course, such a script would never make it to the production department, let alone the airwaves, in this hyper-sensitive culture where everything remotely offensive to anyone is not allowed. Except, of course, to Christians.

Keillor commentary

What a great article by Garrison Keillor in The Star (2/24, Opinion, “Let’s do lunch: But leave the political talk alone”).
If I were to choose a person to model good judgment and common sense, Keillor would be the first person I would think of.
What a riot! He makes me laugh. He gets me to sing along. Now he makes me want to go to lunch or go skating, and maybe I will.
I hope you print more of his commentaries. He is very talented.
