You may know that Pastor Fred Phelps’ “God Hates Fags” folks paid Lee’s Summit North High School a visit Friday night. They were there to picket opening night of a theater production called “The Laramie Project.” The show provides an intimate look into the small Wyoming town where a young gay man was beaten to death by two other local boys.
It was a cold, wet and windy 38 degrees, and they looked miserable holding up their miserable signs. But just on the other side of the street was a tightly huddled band of more than 100 cheering, laughing, chanting teenage counter-protesters. The kids drowned out the hate with the excitement that is exclusive to young people standing up for the first time against something they know is wrong.
Inside the show, students, fresh from the fight, came together with supportive teachers, parents and administrators. Even the president of the school board was there to witness the power and beauty of this experience and the show itself.
Thank you Fred Phelps, for a night to remember.
